As Access to Psychedelics Rapidly Expands, the Need for Competent Psychedelic Practitioners Has Never Been More Critical.
Psychedelics are becoming increasingly accessible due to decriminalization, legalization efforts, and groundbreaking regulatory changes. This has sparked a renewed exploration of their therapeutic potential on a global scale. Researchers are now investigating their efficacy in addressing various well-being and mental health concerns, including depression, addiction, PTSD, eating disorders, grief, and end-of-life care.
There is a growing demand for proficient practitioners who are able to navigate this evolving field in a responsible way in order to mitigate the risks associated with psychedelic-assisted care. However, the current landscape presents a myriad of challenges. Approaches to educating ethical, embodied, and experienced practitioners vary widely, appropriate regulatory requirements are scarce, and industry best practices are still unclear and ill-defined.
The optimal conditions that enable a practitioner to hold space for psychedelic experiences to unfold in an ethical manner require responsible individuals to embody certain ethical standards beyond the mere core competencies. This holds true whether working in a traditional one-on-one therapeutic context or facilitating ceremonial spaces for individuals and groups and is irrespective of background and training.
Providing ethical, culturally responsive, and somatically aware psychedelic care that fosters positive short-term and long-term outcomes requires that practitioners receive interdisciplinary training in best practices, which mitigates risk and reduces harm. An integrative approach encourages cultural competency, ensuring that care is sensitive to a diverse array of perspectives and traditions. Integrating insights from a broad spectrum of disciplines allows for a more nuanced understanding of the complexities inherent to psychedelic journeys.
This is why the Synthesis Institute, in collaboration with leading scholars, practitioners, and thought leaders across various modalities, has developed the 10-Hour Foundational Course on Ethical Psychedelic Care. Based on the Synthesis Institute signature Four-Lens approach, this course is designed to equip aspiring and established psychedelic practitioners with the necessary foundations for working with psychedelics, both inside and beyond traditional therapeutic models.
The Synthesis Four-Lens Approach Honors Many Ways of Knowing
The Synthesis approach recognizes that there are many ways of knowing. Our understanding of psychedelics, psychedelic care, and the psychedelic journey acknowledges and honors these different perspectives, using four primary lenses designed to capture the breadth and depth of the psychedelic field.
EMBODIED WISDOM
The capacity to access your own embodied wisdom is a prerequisite of being able to hold space for others. Through the lens of embodied wisdom practices including somatic, spiritual, and self-reflection exercises, personal conduct and ethics can be explored and developed in a holistic way.
COGNITIVE WISDOM
This lens looks at the contributions of history, philosophy, and science to our modern-day understanding of psychedelics.
SACRED WISDOM
This lens explores the variety of ways in which people create meaning in their lives, including spiritual, philosophical, nature-based, and wisdom-based approaches.
RELATIONAL WISDOM
This lens encourages us to develop a deeper sense of our role in relation to the wider ecosystem of life. Building relational wisdom and intelligence involves exploring ways of being more deliberate and intentional in our work, as we seek to make a meaningful impact in the world.
Whether you want to broaden your existing skills through an interdisciplinary framework, better support your clients in their psychedelic journeys, or aspire to specialize in psychedelic care, the 10-Hour Foundational Course on Ethical Psychedelic Care provides you with an introduction to the foundational knowledge and practices required to become an ethical, trauma-informed psychedelic practitioner.

Does The Synthesis Institute have a Code of Ethics that the organization adheres to?
Yes, The Synthesis Institute has a Practitioner Code of Ethics and Conduct, a living document of 40+ pages that has not yet been made public. This code emerged from a rigorous process of examining and updating core principles to guide our work safely, effectively, and ethically.
Participants in the Psychedelic Practitioner Training gain access to this document, and we are committed to iterating upon it through multiple rounds of feedback from internal and external stakeholders before considering it complete and ready for public distribution.
The Synthesis Practitioner Code of Ethics and Conduct offers guidelines, principles, and rules for staff, practitioners, trainees, facilitators, contractors, interns, directors, and employees to orient and attune to the ethical dimension of their work. While primarily written for facilitators and support staff, it also applies to ancillary staff, including retreat teams, marketing, public relations, leadership, etc., where applicable.
Practitioners, defined as all Synthesis Institute team members involved in delivering psychedelic care in any capacity, are guided by the Synthesis Practitioner Code of Ethics and Conduct, in addition to the standards and code of conduct of their respective professional bodies.
This document, a collaborative effort with contributions from many, represents decades of accumulated knowledge and best practices in psychotherapy, the psychedelic field, indigenous traditions, and science. The authors acknowledge standing on the shoulders of those who came before and do not claim originality for this Practitioner Code of Ethics and Conduct.
Acknowledging it as a living document, it is subject to revision and reexamination by an internal committee of Synthesis staff. Updates can occur at any time based on new best practices or ethical considerations.
